Network Mapping – Commercial application?

I read of interest on this post about a network mapping service that has created relational maps about investors, companies and people in the Silicon Valley.
For example, they made a map of the capital links between the three big social networking sites (Facebook, Friendster & LinkedIn). You can view more examples here.
What’s interesting is that this is a paying service – to fully access and use the maps – which points out the value that network mapping can have – for analysing complex situations.
Thanks to Kushtrim Xhakli for bringing this to my attention.

Thanks for posting about us. This is Brad from GroupScope, and we developed this network visualization tool. I just wanted to pass along that although we are planning on going to revenue within a month or so, for the time being it is still free to sign up and get full access to our mapping features and data set. So please drop by and visit and make some maps of your own, just visit http://www.linksviewer.com and click on the link for “trial membership.” And let me know if you have any questions. 🙂 -Brad

Glenn,
Interesting application indeed. Similar to the Social Networking Theory/Analysis approach used by Hill and Knowlton’s recently launched Influencer Network Analysis / Communications Mapping suite of services:

Thank you Alan, it’s interesting to see the number of this type of products sprouting up. Looking at their cases studies, they use networking mapping to analyse the contacts between press, spokespersons & expert commentators. So in a way, it’s an extension of traditional media monitoring.

…an extension of tradional media monitoring until or unless there is an extra layer of analysis (as content analysis is to traditional media monitoring), quantitative data and qualitative commentary behind it. Then, it beomces more useful, I think.

yes, true Alan, it is another layer of analysis from the standard media monitoring – and more useful also.
